The Argan tree

The Argan tree (Argania Spinosa) comes from the family Sapotaceae. It can reach 10 meters tall and live 150 to 200 years. The Argan tree only grows in the forests in the southwest of Morocco.

These trees have been growing for centuries in this country in arid, semiarid areas and near the desert, except in the sand. The Phoenicians were the first to use Argan oil as fuel to light their lamps. But Berbers were the ones who discovered the cosmetic and nutritional properties of Argan oil.
In 1999, UNESCO declared as universal patrimony Argan forests to protect the World Biosphere Reserve of extinction due to deforestation and desertification. This territory covers 830,000 ha over the country from the north to the border of the Sahara desert.
